Denver – U.S. potato exports remained steady in the nine-month period from July 2023 to March 2024, with volume down just 1 percent from the same period last year. Export values increased 5 percent to $1.7 billion.

The dollar value of U.S. potato exports increased across all categories during the period, while volume increased for fresh, dehydrated and seed potatoes.

U.S. fresh potato export volume increased 11 percent compared to the year before, and the value increased 9 percent to $253 million. Fresh export growth was driven by a 64 percent increase in export volume to Mexico. Mexico accounted for 44 percent of all U.S. fresh potato export volume during the July 2023-March 2024 period, followed by Canada (23 percent) and Central America (8 percent).

Exports of U.S. dehydrated potatoes increased 4 percent in both volume and dollar value during the period. The largest markets for U.S. dehydrated potatoes were Canada (42 percent), Mexico (19 percent) and Japan (14 percent). Dehydrated potato exports to Canada increased 18 percent, while exports to Mexico increased 10 percent and exports to Japan decreased 19 percent.

U.S. frozen export volume declined 8 percent from the previous year, but the dollar value of those exports increased 4 percent to $1.1 billion. The largest export markets for U.S. frozen potatoes are Japan (27 percent), Mexico (23 percent) and South Korea (8 percent). The decline in export volume for frozen potatoes was due to an 11 percent decrease in exports to Japan and a 13 percent decrease in exports to South Korea
