Team Potato launched its very first Speedy Spud contest to find an athlete who will spread the message that potatoes are a nutrient-dense, highly effective fuel source on social media and by running a race (5K or longer) in a custom potato costume.

A potato costume? The costume is a raceable, breathable, one-piece potato outfit created specifically for the winning athlete with comfort and flair in mind.

  • The Speedy Spud winner will race across the finish line in style, proudly showcasing the health benefits of America’s favorite vegetable with nutritional information on the costume’s back.
  • As the Speedy Spud races past, spectators will learn that a medium, skin-on potato is a key energy source that has high-quality carbohydrates, potassium, protein, vitamin C and iron.

Who will be the Speedy Spud? The contest winner will receive free entry to the race of their choice, with a length of 5K or more, will highlight their training journey on social media, and agree to wear the Speedy Spud costume for that race. The contest is open to athletes of all fitness levels. Contestants must let Team Potato know in 100 words or less why they should be the first Speedy Spud. The winner will be the funniest, most original and most compelling entry — or, in case there are too many strong entries, a wheel will decide!

When and where will the race be? The race must be held in the U.S., and the timing is contingent on who is selected to be the winner. Local news media will be invited to the event to help spread potatoes’ nutrition message even further.

Promoting potatoes: In addition to the Speedy Spud costume spreading a positive nutrition message about potatoes as performance fuel, the contest will share more detailed nutrition messages to potential contestants on social media. These will include athlete-approved potato recipes, such as:
