Michigan Potato Grower, Industry Leader Larry Young Dies At 86

Larry Arthur Young, 86, of Grand Rapids, passed away at home on October 22, 2024 after a long and fulfilling life.

Larry was born on December 31, 1937, to Richard and Margaret (Miller) Young in Howard City, Michigan. He graduated from Lakeview Community Schools in 1956. Larry always knew he wanted to be a farmer and take care of the land. As soon as he graduated from Lakeview High School he started farming with his Dad on R & L Young Farms, which eventually became Sandyland Farms.

He was a tireless advocate for leadership development, playing a pivotal role in establishing the Potato Industry Leadership Institute (PILI)," said Kelly Turner, executive director, Michigan Potato Industry Commission. "His vision and dedication have shaped generations of leaders, ensuring the future of the industry remains strong and vibrant. His legacy will continue to inspire those who follow in his footsteps."

Visitation and funeral services will be held at New Life United Methodist Church6584 W Howard City Edmore Rd, Six Lakes, MI 48886 on Saturday, Oct. 26. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. A luncheon will follow. Burial will follow the luncheon at West Pine Cemetery.
