The U.S. Department of Agriculture has changed the packing requirements for potato growers in Idaho and eastern Oregon.
An interim rule issued Aug. 6 removes the requirement that fiberboard cartons used to pack 50-pound quantities of U.S. No. 2 grade potatoes be of one-piece construction. The change, according to the rule, is needed to respond to market demands and to provide handlers flexibility in shipping U.S. No. 2 grade potatoes.
The requirement that cartons be of natural kraft color and be permanently and clearly marked by grade will not change, the USDA said.
Comments received by Oct. 6 will be considered before a final rule is issued, according to the USDA.
