The Little Potato Co. is making a big splash with its Chilean Splash creamer potatoes.
Christa Wagner, senior marketing manager for the company, says the unique purple potatoes, introduced in January, are already a big hit with retailers and consumers at a price point of $3.49 to $4.99 for a 1.5-pound bag.
“We’re always looking for varietals that are going to be new and exciting and with gorgeous plate appeal like this,” Wagner said, speaking on the expo floor April 14 at the Canadian Produce Marketing Association’s annual convention and trade show. “People don’t expect their potatoes to be purple.”
Company literature on the potatoes describes them as originating in the “fertile steppes of the Chilean Andes,” with “a silky cream skin, luscious texture and unique purple ‘splash…’”
The proprietary variety is sold pre-washed and doesn’t require peeling. The potatoes can be cooked in a microwave in five minutes, boiled in 15, or roasted or barbecued in 30.
