This article appears in the August 2017 issue of Potato Grower.
With the help of some of the good folks with the Potato Variety Management Institute, this month’s Smorgasbord takes a look at Teton Russet, a dual-purpose, early russet with good yield and high protein and vitamin C.
History
Parentage: Blazer Russet × Classic Russet
Developed by the Tri-State Breeding and Research Program, released in 2012
PVP issued in 2014
Key Attributes
- High early- and late-season yields
- Nice tuber shape and appearance
- Excellent fry color and culinary qualities
- Resistant to external defects
- Short to medium dormancy
- Good specific gravity
Irrigation
- Available soil moisture should be maintained between 65 and 85 percent from full emergence until late bulking; reduce to 60 to 65 percent as vines start to senesce. Avoid excessive soil moisture from mid- to late bulking.
Storage
- Store at 47 to 48 degrees to avoid sugar development.
- Dormancy length 30 to 40 days shorter than Russet Burbank, depending on storage temperature. Teton Russet had a dormancy length in 45-degree storage of about 105 days compared to 135 for Russet Burbank.
- Significantly lower susceptibility to Fusarium dry rot than Russet Burbank
Weed Control
- Use of Matrix in weed control may result in growth cracks.
- Not affected by Metribuzin applied at recommended rates
Seed Production
- Teton Russet seed has been primarily been grown in Idaho, Colorado and Montana, although more sources of seed should be available from the 2017 seed crop. Check www.pvmi.org for a full list of seed growers.
