For this month’s Smorgasbord, we turned to SunRain Potato Varieties, an Idaho-based company that grows and markets around 100 varieties of early-generation seed potatoes annually—many of which the company owns the trademarks to. SunRain provides early- and limited-generation seed to both seed and commercial entities.
One of SunRain’s most promising varieties is the early-maturing Malou, which produces attractive, round tubers with vibrant yellow skin and medium-yellow flesh with a smooth texture.

Agronomic Traits
- High yields with normal inputs
- Early maturing
- No secondary growth issue in hot climates
- Resistant to PVY, blackleg, tuber blight and Rhizoctonia
- Fertility slightly higher than common yellow varieties
- Sensitive to metribuzin
- Medium to late storage
Culinary Quality
- Good for roasting, baking, frying and boiling
- Smooth, creamy texture when cooked
- Buttery flavor
- In France, where it was originally bred, Malou is renowned for its excellent flavor both roasted and boiled. It also makes a delicious yellow mash.
