The Smorgasbord: Red Endeavor

In this month’s Smorgasbord, we take a look at Red Endeavor, a late-maturing red table-stock variety developed by the University of Wisconsin-Madison breeding program. Many thanks to Jeffrey Endelman for his help in gathering this information.

  • B1491-5 × W1100R

 

Appearance

  • Uniform, round tubers
  • Attractive, medium-red skin color
  • Bright white flesh
  • Shallow eyes

 

Morphological Traits

  • Vigorous, semi-erect to spreading vines
  • Slow-developing canopy that retains vigor well
  • Grayish-purple flowers with moderate pollen production

 

Agronomic Traits

  • Full-season vine maturity
  • High yield potential
  • Similar specific gravity to Dark Red Norland (1.050 to 1.065)
  • Tolerant to Verticillium wilt and common scab
  • Six to 10 tubers per plant
  • Low incidence of internal defects
  • Susceptible to early and late blight
  • No metribuzin toxicity has been found at recommended rates.
  • Few internal defects

 

Storage

  • Long tuber dormancy
  • Maintains skin quality in storage
