Cordoba Technologies, Inc. (CTI) was recently awarded a silver medal for its product, Hummingbird, from the 2018 Vector Awards sponsored by igus GmbH, a Germany-based manufacturer with U.S. headquarters in Providence, R.I. Santiago M. Prandi and Philip J. Reh, CTI’s co-founders, accepted the award during last month’s Hanover Messe trade show in Hanover, Germany.

The Vector Awards are presented during a competition that recognizes the world’s most innovative energy chain applications. This year’s event featured 187 applications from companies in 30 countries and was kicked off by German chancellor Angela Merkel.

Hummingbird reduces crop protection chemical use through an innovative precision spray system. In the application, a combination of cables and hoses are carried in a rail assembly that hangs under the pivot system. With pivot water off, the Hummingbird executes crop protection product application instructions from the user. The exceptional flexibility and precision placement of sensors or spray nozzles over a crop gives growers a powerful tool in the sustainable agriculture movement.

Hummingbird is a multi-tasking toolbar that allows precision placement of crop protection products in open fields. It replaces ground rig machines by using an asset already in the field: the center pivot irrigation system. It can be equipped with sensors and software that collect data about crop health and nutrient levels. With 24/7 on-demand availability of the system and its ability to operate with precision, only minimum amounts of crop protection products are typically applied.

Cordoba Technologies earned the silver award for its creative mechatronics design and the positive environmental impact its new technology offers.

“To receive this honor so early in our company life confirms that we have developed new technology that benefits farmers and the environment,” says CTI chief operating officer Phil Reh. “We know that farmers always strive to reduce input costs and use best management practices. Hummingbird reduces crop protection product use, supports plant health, gives growers more pest and disease control options, and opens a new frontier on sustainable farming practices.”

“To achieve this level of distinction is an honor,” says Santiago Prandi, CEO of CTI. “Placing between Loxin of Spain, a key supplier to Airbus Industries, and its industrial robot that is used in the final assembly of airplane fuselages; and the German company, Thyssennkrupp Elevators, for its innovation, was more than a vote for CTI. It recognizes the importance of agriculture. As a farmer myself, that makes this extra special. Being cited for excellence along with these innovators is exciting for our team.”
