Southern Idaho’s Cassia and Minidoka Soil and Water Conservation districts will sponsor a soil health workshop at 8 a.m., Feb. 17, at the Best Western Burley Inn and Convention Center in Burley, Idaho.
The workshop will offer two pesticide credits.
The workshop is part of the Mini-Cassia districts’ three-year Direct Seed & Cover Crop Project. The project also includes direct seed drills available for rent, cover crop seed information and financial reimbursement, an annual Field Tour, a variety of educational opportunities, and the annual Soil Health Workshop.
The keynote speaker for this year’s workshop will be Brendon Rockey from Rockey Farms in Colorado. His talk, “A Biotic Approach to Potato Production,” is based on his success as a potato farmer who uses cover crops to improve his soil health and potato production.
Other speakers and topics will include:
- The Value of Cover Crops—Keith Berns, Green Cover Seed
- Healthy Soil—Marlon Winger, Idaho state agronomist
- Pesticide Training—Carlo Moreno, Minidoka County Extension Education
- Direct Seed & Cover Crop Project Overview—Brian Kossman, Minidoka Soil and Water Conservation District
- Food Security Act Requirements—Nick Treasure, FSA
- Testimonials from landowners currently using cover crops
The workshop and luncheon are free of charge, though there may be a minor charge for the pesticide credit. Space is limited, so those planning to attend are required to RSVP. Interested parties may call (208) 678-1225, ext. 100, for information and registration.
